CHAPTER 22

Iro hit the bhurbeast like a falling star. He cleaved it in two and stumbled out through the other side. Behind him, the bhurbeast fell in two pieces, gore seeping out into the earth.

His crest flickered out of existence. He’d used Light Blade and Blink Strike and super charged himself with Burning Adrenaline. In less than a second, he’d burned through his entire battery of current. He sank to his knees, exhausted. He had to lean on his sword just to stop from keeling over.

The harvesters turned and cheered. Iro saw overalls and uniforms, not a single scrap of armor or a weapon more dangerous than a spade between them all. They would never have stood a chance against the bhurbeast, or any monster. They surrounded him. Some cheered, others clapped him on the back. One of them even worked up the courage to approach the leaking monster corpse and spit on it. Now Iro looked a little more closely, there was something off about the corpse, but he didn’t have time to think about it.

Emil and the squad leader were bounding down the hill away from the trees, closing on them all, but they were still a few seconds away. Iro couldn’t quite believe how much distance he’d crossed with a single Blink Strike. His new talent boosted his abilities so much. He struggled back to his feet, waving the harvesters away, and stepped closer to the corpse.

The bhurbeast was a great, shaggy mound of hair, flesh, blood, and horn. Its guts spilled out on the earth, glistening and ropey. And moving. Coils of worms writhed within the stinking mass. They crawled around, linking to each other, digging into the corpse. It was disgusting.

The squad leader was the first to arrive and started organising the harvesters, ordering them to retrieve the cart. It was lying on its side, wheels spinning. The muddy tubers the harvesters had been collecting were scattered around.

Emil ran up to Iro and slapped him so hard on the back Iro staggered to his knees. His current was only starting to refill. Faster than in the Power Acceleration Chamber, but still so slow. “You did it!” the Paladin said.

Iro struggled back to his feet and pointed at the corpse. “Are you seeing this?”

More and more of the worms inside the bhurbeast wriggled, coiling around each other. It must have been full of them. As Iro watched, the front half of the monster shifted as the worms constricted, pulling the two halves back together.

“What the scrap?” Emil said.

One worm whipped free of the corpse, flailed about, slapping against the ground. Some of the blood wiped away and Iro realised it was metallic. They all were. Metal worms infesting the bhurbeast, reassembling it.

The two halves of the bhurbeast squelched together. The skin bulged, worms wriggling about beneath the flesh. Then the monster shifted, legs flailing, and rolled back to its feet. It turned a gleaming red gaze on Iro and Emil.

The squad leader bounded between them, swung her shield and smashed it into the bhurbeast’s side.
